Message from our Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Happy New Year and Welcome back! It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces on Monday morning as we re-entered our Smithson doors for 2012. I hope that all of you had a wonderful break and enjoyed our spring-like weather. The grades 5 and 6 classes are skiing in a couple of weeks so hopefully we have a bit of the “white stuff,” to enjoy on those days.
We are nearing the completion of Term 1. January 20 is a PD Day and this day is used by teachers for assessment and reporting. Reports will go home on February 13. There are no formal parent/teacher interviews for this reporting period; however, you are most welcome to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions for concerns.
Staff continues to meet and plan for their Learning Cycles and our Primary Team is working on an Early Primary Inquiry Project with the focus statement being “if Primary teachers provide and model a variety of Higher Order Questioning Strategies, then the students will improve the depth of the written communication.” Teachers will be looking for evidence from their research in the outcomes of their Learning Cycles.
School Council meets on Monday January 16 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.
We currently have a Smithson family in need and are asking for your support. The parents of one of our students have had a very difficult time over the past year and a half. Mom suffered a severe stroke and is still recuperating from that and Dad, who was her caregiver, has recently suffered from a virus that has attacked his heart. He will be in the hospital in Toronto for some time. These illnesses have meant that neither of these young parents is working nor are there any medical benefits. Mrs. Sauder and Mrs., Shafer are arranging for several activities at the school to support this family e.g., bake sale, floor hockey tournament, popcorn sales etc. All proceeds will be donated to the family. If you would like to send a donation to the school that is greatly appreciated as well, and will go toward grocery/gas cards and other incidentals. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Wishing you all of the best in 2012.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Graham,
Principal

THANK YOU!  (see below!)
A giant "Thank-you" to everyone for your baking, your monetary donations, your words of encouragement, etc. etc. for the wonderful Fundraiser for our student and her family!!!! We have almost reached our goal of $500.00.  I might try to reach the final goal with one more day of floor hockey this week, (due to popular demand!) There may be a  .50 cents charge for spectators this time easy stenciling activity to do on the stage. I seem to have lots of kids who wanted to watch the big games.
Thank you again for all your support!  ~ Mrs. Sauder
An update re: Support for a Smithson Family
We have been made aware that the medication that is being used on the Dad of the family we are supporting through our fundraisers, has had another set-back. His heart is not responding to the medications and therefore he is on a list for a heart transplant.
We continue to support this family through some fundraising initiatives at the school; Floor Hockey for Primary students with Mrs. Sauder, bake sales, popcorn sales, and next week Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Mousseau will be offering floor hockey for the Juniors at $ 1 per game on Tuesday Jan 31 and Thursday Feb 2. Any other donations or gift cards are gratefully accepted.

Boomerang Tuesdays!
boomeranglunchsnacks.jpg
In order to reduce the waste going to landfill sites and to improve our environmental footprint, the Green Team is promoting
"Boomerang Tuesdays"
Beginning November 8th and continuing on for every Tuesday throughout the remainder of the year.
Litterless lunches are defined as:
1. Snacks and food packed in reusable and resealable containers (not disposable bags or packaging)
2. Leftover food will be returned back home in their containers. Any packaging goes home too... like a  boomerang.
(A boomerang lunch also allows parents to see what their children are actually eating during the day. )
Let's keep Smithson Green.
Use reusable containers.

Keeping  Green!!
Smithson Public School is now registered as an Eco School! We want to get certified! Great steps are in order to make this possible. We will be monitoring our Energy Conservation and our Waste Minimization in our school through comparison reports being completed by our Junior Green Team!
We Need Your Help!
We need to create an ECO Team to assist in attaining our goal. Planting to planning. Everyone is welcome to join. Parents, neighbours, teachers, E.A.'s, custodial staff, Administration, etc. If interested, please contact:
Rose Anstett at: rose_anstett@wrdsb.on.ca

Another ways you can help:
Gardening
Garden Tools (do you have anything you'd like to donate?)
Tarps
Wheelbarrow
Trees and seeds
Newspapers (needed for green bins)

We now have 41 students who have joined our Junior Green Team!  They meet every Thursday. In our first meeting, we discussed our goals, what would they like to see, and what our year will look like.
We are forming 4 managerial teams:
Load it Up - Compost Managers
Shout It Out Loud - Morning Announcement Authors
Use It Again - Recycling Managers
All Over The World - Green Web Page Managers
They will all be instrumental in creating the classroom reports/Audits on Waste Minimization and Energy Conservation. These results will be tabulated and displayed on our Green Team Board.
There are a number of other activities our Green Team will be participating in, from Worm Rescue to A Million Year Picnic.
Grade 6's Plant Their Roots
at Smithson
Bowhall fall.jpg
(This is a photo of a mature Bowhill Maple tree)
The Grade 6 class was busy planting a tree on Monday, November 14th. They planted their graduating class tree of 2012!  The tree planted was a Bowhill Maple. It can grow to a height of 13m and has a width of only 3-5 m. In the fall, the foliage (leaves) are red-orange in colour. It was planted outside the grade 4/5 window, offering natural "air conditioning" inside the classroom during those hot summer months.
Thanks Grade 6 for being green!
The tree was purchased at  John's Nursery in Waterloo.

Hearing .jpg
Hearing Services Program
At Smithson, we have an on-site educational audiologist whose services are extended to the entire region by Mr. Riza Razack.
Early intervention has been an important aspect of our Hearing Services Program at Smithson, long before Junior Kindergarten started in Ontario. Students start school as young as three years of age and with low student to teacher ratio, we are able to provide highly individualized programs to begin to meet the needs of this group of children. Using an auditory-oral method of communication and current hearing technology, our focus is on the early and ongoing development of language, speech and listening skills.
Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about our specialized program.
